I am about to list something for sale on eBay but thought I would ask if any Oppos have done the same? What would you recommend? Do I just post a full description with decent pictures? Are there any other things I should consider?
The plan is to list the item as an auction with a reserve price. I will include a description and several clear images. I know there will be a commission of 10% for the site and a 2% commission for the reserve I will place. Then PayPal will take another 3% +$o.30 for the sale. Am I missing anything here?

I sold a rare gold coin on Ebay in a day, didn’t do an auction thing.

I considered that. Is there a reason you didn’t do the auction? Is it just easier?

I was afraid it wouldn’t sell either way so i just gave it a “buy now” price and gave it a shot

I’ve been running a store on there for the last 7 years. Key is a good description, but not too wordy as the majority won’t read it. Lots of high quality photos, if it’s a small item it’s easy enough to set up a white background for it.
Depending on what the item is you’ll have to add the ebay catalouge details, which can be a PITA as ebay frequently gets them wrong.
The reserve can be offputting to some buyers, you could start the bidding at somewhere handy to the price you want, or do it as a buy it now only listing with offers, that’s what we do for the majority of our products.
Don’t bank on the winning bidder actually completing the transaction, youu might need to relist a few times before you get a genuine buyer. Using the buy it now tends to reduce this.
Ebay is an expensive way to sell and the buyers are often hard work, but you can reach a lot of people.

Interesting. I think I’ll do the buy-it-now with a best offer now since it seems to be the easier way.
How do you handle the shipping if you don’t mind my asking?

Chinny already gave you a lot of good pointers, but you need to also remember to get your item out in the mail as soon as possible. When you list your item you select your handling time. Unless you know it will take several days to get an item out in the mail, put one day and do it in one day. And depending on what you’re shipping, use USPS Flate Rate as it’s quick and cheap (even though I can’t stand USPS).
Also, free shipping means a lot to people, but then I would raise the price of your item to reflect the shipping costs, unless what you’re selling is very competitive, in which case just put the shipping costs down.
So, get your item out in the mail quickly, lest you get a negative review, which will kill your chances of selling on eBay again.

Good points. I just listed a flat rate for shipping with UPS Ground. We will see how it goes. I will see how it goes and then take your advice on the free shipping since it has been posted. Thanks for the tips.

UPS is my first choice because I’ve found them to be the most reliable, but their times and can’t compete with Flate Rate, so I always end up using that. And you can go in and change your listing to change the shipping.

Yeah, I figure since UPS Ground I can have them require a signature it should be a little better. I just went in and changed it to free shipping.

Unless you’re selling something super high value, I’d recommend against requiring a signature since most people hate it and it can be a pain in the ass. As long as it’s properly insured and you have documentation you can get your money back.

I haven’t sold much before, but I did sell a stick of laptop RAM awhile back. Not a big item, so shipping wasn’t a big deal at all, so I would just say use a flat rate for shipping, post a detailed ACCURATE description (be honest!) and some decent pics.
That's gonna leave a mark!

I have sold everything from a car to parts to coins on EBay. Good advice already given. If you are going to do an auction, have it end on a Saturday or Sunday night. Gives bidders a time when they aren’t normally busy doing other things to get involved.
